I had windows mail on this computer before and then it crashed and had to be
rebooted from scratch. Now I have lost all of my previous email files. Is
there any way to get them back?

Probably NOT, but lets explore...
What does "rebooted from scratch" mean?
Did you by any chance have "leave message on server" checked in your client
e-mail account"?

I had to reinstall vista which deleted everything. I found all of my old
files under "Windows.old" but there was no e-mail files there. I don't know
if I had "leave message on server" checked.

Windows Mail messages are stored in
C:\Users\(youraccount)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail

The is no such folder as AppData located there or any place else. Under
users\myaccount is the following: Contacts, Desktop, Documents, Downloads,
Favorites, Links, Music, Pictures, Saved Games, Searches, Videos. That is
it. Any other thoughts?

Hi Jake, perhaps this'll help a little. On my Vista system under "Users," my
account name is listed as "Tony." Under that is a folder named "AppData."
Opening that folder I find, "Local," and under that I find, "Microsoft," and
under that I find, "Windows Mail," which has all of my mail folder that I
created. After reading this thread, what I did was to copy the entire
"Windows Mail" folder to an external Hard Drive, just in case I ran into the
same issue you've noted. I would think your "Windows Mail" would have to be
under some account name you've created, or perhaps it's under another "Users"
folder, such as "Default," or "Public" . . . maybe. However, it would have
to be there under "Users," somewhere. Good luck with this, I can appreciate
the headache this is for you.

Also, I believe that the email folder is among the hidden folders, so
you'll probably have to enable displaying system and hidden files
when searching for it.

I found the appdata for the email files since I have reloaded everything
yesterday, but can't find the same folder in the windows.old file. I'll keep
looking, but it seems that it was erased somehow. Thanks for everyone's
help.
