Lost documents

Windows XP was not starting in any mode, tried all options. Eventually after
leaving the start-up running for a lengthy period the startup continued and
ran chkdisk. When start-up completed all my documents appeared to have gone.
Is there anywhere I can check to see if they still exist?

this is an exc freeware program for searching by name or even inside
files,directories,etc.
