Lost DNS Registration

This is a re-post since I received no responses to my query. For the past
several months I have been losing my DNS name registration settings
intermittently while using my DSL Internet connection. Because "Repair this
Connection" works, and as per other advice in this forum I ran through the
repair procedure manually to determine exactly what was being repaired. I
have discovered that the Command "ipconfig /registerdns" is the command that
fixes my connection. Now I need some advice on why this is happening or how
to fix the problem so that I do not lose the connection in the first place.
Is this a problem on my machine or with my ISP's server?

My setup is an Ethernet connection to a Cisco DSL router/modem. Integrated
3Com 3C920 Fast Ethernet Controller in a Dell P4 1.5 gig machine w/512 Ram.

I'm not sure I follow what is happening.
The "ipconfig /registerdns" command registers YOUR
computer settings in the DNS of the ISP--it was not
intended to restore the referenced DNS server settings on
your machine. I do not see why you would want your
machine's settings in the DNS of the ISP, so I assume you
are trying to restore the local DNS server settings.

If you are losing the DNS server settings, as noted in
the "ipconfig /all", that is probably an ISP issue. It
could be that you have the local IP settings set up
wrong, and have a manual entry in the DNS settings, under
Advanced. Are there any entries in the event logs when
this happens? Does it happen on boot-up, or do you just
lose the setting when the computer is up and running?
Does it happen after hibernation or standby?

I would think that the "ipconfig /renew" should fix this
in a more appropriate manner, or
maybe "ipconfig /release" followed by
an "ipconfig /renew".

If you could send your specific IP settings from the
network connection, and the information from
the "ipconfig /all", that would help us determine what
the problem is. Also, any information from the event
logs would assist.

Thank you for the response. This problem started about a month ago and is
very intermittent. It happens only after a connection is established after
boot. Usually several hours of connection and then a sudden loss of internet
access. I contacted the ISP and they of course pointed at Windows. I then
discovered that the "Repair this Connection function under the Network
Connections window worked. I then on following occurrences, tried the manual
commands that MS lists that Repair this Connection uses. The ipconfig /renew
is the first on the list. When I tried it, the command failed with a message
something about something not existing. (Sorry I do not remember the exact
message. I then went through each of the remaining MS listed commands, all
of which completed with no connection. As soon as I ran ipconfig
/registerdns, the connection was immediately established. So far today the
loss of connection occurred once about one hour into the session this
morning and has not reoccurred again today. There are no errors in the event
log.

To recap, the loss happens after I am up and running, happens randomly and
ipconfig /renew does not help, but ipconfig/ registerdns immediately
establishes a connection. TCP/IP configured as : IP Address 10.0.0.100

Just after I posted the previous information, It happened again. ipconfig
/renew gives the following response " Failed as no adapter is in the state
permissible for this operation" Ipconfig /registerdns immediately restored
the connection.
