If 98 is currently installed, no. You need the 98 CD as proof of
ownership only if it's not installed and you are doing a clean
installation with an Upgrade version.
So you can install without it if if 98 is installed, However, if
you have an upgrade version, you will never be able to do a clean
reinstallation, should you ever need to, without a previous
qualifying version's CD.
Win95 is a qualifying product for the WinXP Upgrade disk. That disk
will not upgrade an existing Win95 system, though. You have to delete
the Win95 system and install WinXP clean. When the install process
asks for proof of a qualifying product you put the Win95 CD into the
drive. That will satisfy the installer, and the installation will
continue.
Sorry, this isn't correct. ALthough you can't upgrade over the
top of a Windows 95 installation, a Windows 95 CD *does* work as
proof of a previous qualifying version when doing a clean
installation with an upgrade version of XP.
