Lost Delayed-Write Data

I am seeing this error on my Dell 8300 workstation when transfering large
amounts of data (many small files, not just a few big ones) from network
devices to my hard drive.

{Lost Delayed-Write Data} The system was attempting to transfer file data
from buffers to \Device\HarddiskVolume2. The write operation failed, and
only some of the data may have been written to the file

I cannot account for the Volume2 identity. There is only one hard drive on
my workstation. It would be nice to know what files might have failed to be
written.

I then copied and pasted about 250mb of project files from network attached
storage to my C drive. While that transfer was going on I picked up three
more project directories from another network server and dropped those.
There were small, about 2 - 3 mb in total size, but a lot of files. Got
about 3 more of those delayed write errors all referring to Volume2

Last week I replaced a failing 160gb maxtor with a western digital WD800JB ,
80gb drive. I have a modern P4 system, 3200mhz with intel 82801EB
controller and all the lastest SP, updates and patches from Microsoft. The
WD was a working drive, spare, that came from a server but it had not been
used for 6 months or so.

I assume this is a hardware problem correct? I googled around and saw
recommendations such as latest SP, turning off write cache and even
registery patches. I turned off the write cache, maybe that will fix the
problem???

I wonder if the problem is not the drive but the DMA controller for that
intel chipset or the driver that handles the transfer?

Maybe the problem I had with the maxtor was really a motherboard problem?

Are there some tools that can spot the problem and define it better? This
is an internal drive and not on 1394bus.

look in Event Viewer/system and see what error codes you have.

That is where I got the above message. Error code was 50 and I looked that
up. Not too helpful. I even filled out the microsoft survey and told them
their answer was not too helpful, but I thanked them for asking me how I
felt about them.
