Lost "Computers Near Me"

L

Larry

Was trying to back out of ineffective share folders and
mapped drives. Apparently disconnected or deleted some
thing I should not have. Using Win2oo Pro.
Now I have no 'Work Group' and the 'Computers Near Me'
function. Also a VPN setup I had is not functional. The
Icon is displayed hazy like hidden files.
The Search function on the Start menu is dead too.
Can I restore Work Groups and 'Computers near me' and
these other functions without reinstalling Win2K?

Thank you.

Do you remember exactly what you did?
Is your network adapter still showing up properly in device manager?

Try running netdiag on your computer - it is located on install cd in support/tools folder. Run the setup program in that folder to install tools. Make sure Client for Microsoft Networks is enabled on the adapter and that the Workstation service is started. Look in Event Viewer for any error info for failed services etc. If none of that helps try running System File Checker - sfc /scannow, making sure you have the install disk. I don't know how your Search Menu could be affected though. --- Steve
