Lost cd key

I lost the packaging for my XP Professional OEM cd that came with my
computer. I have the original cd, but I don't have the computer (my wife
took it after smashing the harddrive) Do I need to pay $59 to call MS about
this? I am not working right now. Isn't there a phone number I can call for
free?

Howdy,

Microsoft at 425-635-7222.

I have had similar problems and they have sorted it out free
of charge.

All the best,

It doesn't matter. That OEM license is still permanently bound to that
computer, regardless of who has the CD, and regardless of what happened
to the hard drive.

An OEM version must be sold with a piece of hardware (normally a
motherboard or hard rive, if not an entire PC) and is _permanently_
bound to the first PC on which it's installed. An OEM license, once
installed, is not legally transferable to another computer under _any_
circumstances.

OEM version.
Sticks to whatever first computer on which it is installed.

Your wife took the computer. But she smashed the hard drive she took.
Uh huh, sure she did. So now what does SHE have? A computer with a
smashed hard drive so she screwed herself in her theft. What else does
SHE have? The license for Windows.

What don't YOU have? The computer. You also do NOT have a legitimate
license for Windows. The thief has both.

You'll have to go to court to divorce.
You'll have to go to court to see whose property is whose.

*IF* you get back the computer, you'll get back the Windows license.
Then you can get a replacement CD from Microsoft when it really is your
property and yours alone. Start with the Contact Us link at the bottom
of Microsoft's home page and follow the prompts to select your product
to find the phone number to call. I don't know what proof they require
to show you really are the legal owner of a license for Windows.
They'll know.

Microsoft isn't responsible for your marriage problems.
Microsoft isn't responsible for division of property for a divorce.
Microsoft isn't responsible for theft.

As long as your wife has the computer along with the license, you don't
get another free copy. One license only per sale.

Thank you so much, but this number is no longer valid.

Hi again,

With respect, I would suspect that Microsoft has a listed
number.

In the time it took you to post that the number was no
longer valid, you might have been talking to them.

All the best,

It is an OEM license that came with the computer, it also GOES with the
computer, your WIFE has the computer, it's HER problem. You don't have
any license to fret over.

You remind me of another previous poster who was always treating others as
beneath him, I think you have changed your name again and come back to
belittle people anew, grow a care or two, if not ,leave and don't come back.
we don't need your poor attitude here.

You are correct, I was pretty tired after working 14 hours and not thinking.
That was pretty bad, sorry to bother you

Well, I got the computer back without the cover (which had the oem sticker
on it) So now I will call them and should have not problems as I have
everything but the tag. she threw a chair at me and caused some injury. She
is in jail and I have a restraining order against her. Life is ok for now.
thanks for your help

I suggest you move and change your telephone number. For anything
dealing with the soon-to-be-exwife, go through a lawyer.
