Lost both CD-ROM drives after new additional CD ROM installation

Also have a similar problem with the same machine and Windows XP Pro.
Have the latest BIOS. Compaq 2000 Professional Workstation Pentium 3.

Tried an HP and an IBM (NEC) CD ROM writer both with the original cable
and other replacements, tried CS,MS, & SL settings and every combo of.

I believe this is a hardware issue, it simply does not like CDROM
Writers at all. Other CDrom drives come up fine on same channel
and CS setting.
 
Check Event Viewer and Device Manager for errors and or non-starting
devices.
