Lost all data files

I unfortunately used advice given in a popular newspaper
editorial to try to do away with my Windows XP startup
logon menu. When I did, I lost all of my mail, program
files in the startup menu, dictionaries for Word,
Outlook, etc. Is there a way to go back to my old stuff,
or is it all lost forwever?

I used the recommended "control userpasswords2" in
the "START", "Run" window. After that, I can't remember
what I changed. All I know is it created a brand
new "persona" for me which had no access to any of my old
data files, dictionaries, outlook files, etc.

Sounds like you ended up creating a new user account. If you did not delete
the old account it should still be there. Does it show on the welcome
screen? Check in control userpasswords2 to see if your old user account is
still there. Check in explorer under c:\documents and settings\the old user
name here
and see if your documents are still there.
