Hi,
I'm fairly lost when it comes to Windows, so please bear
with me if this is a completely moronic question ;-)
We have a standalone workstation that is running Windows
2000. The computer crashed when the user was attempting to
add a restricted user...and now when we try to log on, the
only account that is showing up is the one our computer
vendor had put on it as the Admin account when they shipped
it to us ("XDream Machines Cust.").
We never knew the password to this Admin account. The
vendor (XDream Machines) is now out of business, as far as
I can tell. At least, their website and phone # no longer
work.
The only ways I can find to get around this lost password
problem seem to be very expensive ($200+) or
shady/unfamiliar (beta versions of cracker software on
Linux boot discs.)
Or a full reinstall, of course.
We had planned to upgrade the computer to XP soon anyway.
My question is this: If we just put the XP CD into the
drive, will it upgrade to XP and solve the "locked out"
problem - or will we just be locked out of an XP system
instead of a Win2K system?
Also, will upgrading to XP give us a better chance of
salvaging the files on the computer than a reinstall of
2000? The computer is used to edit media footage for a
non-proft, so we'd like to salvage as much as possible.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thank you,
Sunny
