Lost Address Book Addresses

Hello,

A colleague of mine users Outlook Express. She ran a disk clean up and the
x-cleaner utility the other day to get rid of unwanted files and spyware etc.
I have used x-cleaner many times without any problem.

This morning she opened Outlook instead of Outlook Express and selected 'use
as the default client' instead of selecting 'No'.

She now says that some of her contacts in her Outlook Express Address Book
are missing.

My questions really are:-

1) Are these 'missing' contacts retrievable? (I say 'missing' as she is
confident they
are not all there).
2) Is it likely that selecting Outlook by mistake as the default client has
imported
some of the contacts into Outlook?
3) What is the best way to backup Outlook Express, as it does not backup the
way
Outlook allows you to?

Many thanks,
Jason

Outlook uses a different Address Book than what Outlook Express uses. OE
uses the Windows Address Book.

Do a Search for *.wab to find all Windows Address Books on the machine.

Also...
Paste the following line into Start | Run and click OK...

%userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book

There should be at least two files: somename.wa~ and somename.wab.

somename.wa~ is a backup file, it can be copied and renamed.

%userprofile% is Drive:\Documents and Settings\User's Name

[[To be sure OE is the default mail client, close OE, click Start | Run and
enter this command line, complete with quotes, spaces and the /reg switch:

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg

Of course change the path if you installed OE elsewhere.

Now click Start | Settings | Control Panel, double-click Internet Options,
then click on the Programs tab, and verify that OE is now the default email
client. (You can also get there from the IE Tools | Internet Options menu).
Then open OE and click Tools | Options, and at the bottom of the General
tab, verify that OE is set as the default. If it is, the "Make Default"
button will be grayed out. If not, click the button.]]

Do you have this Registry key?...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
\Software
\Microsoft
\WAB
\WAB4

If not, STOP; If so, is there a DWORD named UseOutlook (NB: no space) and is
its value set to 1 (one)?

If not, STOP; If so, Address Book is configured to share contacts with
Outlook, even if you don't use it (can happen with the install of Office).
Change the value to 0 (zero), Address Book should be available to you and
all should be well. (If that DWORD is not present, don't create it, and
don't alter any other DWORD values.)

Note that any changes (additions, deletions, edits) made while sharing was
enabled will not be available (displayed) in Address Book when sharing is
disabled.
