lost ability to ftp

Hi All

I was using zone alarm free fire wall and could never get outlook express to
send or receive emails.

When I disabled it, emails could be sent and received ok.

So after giving up trying to configure it to work, I uninstalled it and
downloaded the free kerio firewall to try. emails came and went fine - BUT I
lost the ability to ftp.

Using Dreamweaver the connection to the server just times out.

I have since uninstalled the Kerio firewall but still no ftp.

I have installed norton security suite (av / as / firewall) and run a full
scan. It detected a Trojan (mailer.dll) which is now quarantined.

But still no ftp - so I assume that something within windows has been
changed via one of the firewall install / uninstall routines.

anyone have any ideas where to start looking.

Personally, I would start looking at the support sites for the products you
are having problems with.

Thanks, I had a quick look on both sites, but I could see nothing that
related to my problem. I will have another look, but I expect that something
within win2000 has been disabled / tweaked

if anyone has any other ideas, I would really appreciate it
as ever

If you can connect, with the Firewall disabled, it simply means that your
Firewall is stopping access.
You therefore have to check the Firewall settings.
In NIS its under 'config firewall' then check the programs tab for the
specific app.

Thanks, I have been having a look at these settings.

I have managed to get dreamweaver FTP client to put and get file, but I also
use some e-commerce store building software (erolonline.co.uk) and I still
cant get this to ftp via its onboard ftp option, despite both dreamweaver
and Erol having the same settings.

In NIS Firewall, Programs access try changing all Deny settings to Ask.
Save
Reboot sys, try again

Thanks for sticking with this post.

Dw and Erol have the same settings - yet on can and one cant ftp!

so I set NIS to custom on EROL but when I publish the software hangs, before
the NIS alert box pops up. If you have any other suggestions, im all
ears.....

If you click the NIS icon, on your task bar, you can disable NIS for xx
mins, Then try your app, if it works you know its a NIS setting thats
stopping it, if not.............?

Thanks - i have given up! I might uninstall NIS and then try again.

Thankfully my 'repaired' desktop has come back so i will sort this out when
i can. over and out
