Lost ability to find and display text boxes in Outlook 2003

Recently updated XP Pro to SP3, IE to 8, set security to High and
applied the latest security updates from MS, now I have the Subject:
problem.

I have always cleaned up emails prior to Forwarding or Replying by
getting rid of all the header info and the multiple 'nested' hidden
text boxes contained in the email from previous Forwards.

I could find these 'hidden' text boxes by moving the cursor around the
screen to locate the edges of these boxes. (The cursor changed into
crossed arrows.) When I clicked on that edge, the outline of the
hidden box was revealed, allowing me to delete it. Removing these
hidden boxes also got rid of the multiple blue lines along the left
edge of the email.

However, after the updates mentioned above, I can no longer find the
edges of these boxes. The cursor does not change shape to let me know
where the hidden boxes are. I am hoping there is a setting I can
change that will allow me to get this function back.

Any ideas or suggestions?

I should note, revealing these hidden boxes only worked on an email
after I had selected Forward or Reply.

Do they reveal themselves when you enable "show markup"?
Press CTRL+SHIFT+8 to toggle it on/off.

No, but I did find an article that suggested enabling MS Word as the
email editor to see the markup characters. That seemed to add some
complexity to the forwarding process, but it did enable me to find
those invisible text boxes. Didn't have Word enabled before. Still
curious to know what changed.
