Loss of system restore and safe mode ...

B

after encountering the Backdoor-CZP and Generic PWS.b trojans.

These would show up after every boot and McAfee said that it had
deleted them. After a minute or so zonealarm would ask permission to
run msiefixd.exe which I think is another one. I wouldn't let it
though and after checking the net figured it wwas also bad.

I tried to run system restore and got this message:

"system restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart
your computer and run restore again"

I've tried using system restore several times and get the same message
and can't even shut it down Also on booting up if I select F8 and safe
mode then it just reboots again.

To make a long story shorter I got rid of the msiefixd.exe (I pray)
and the other two messages from McAfee quit showing up.

My dilemma is ... does anyone know of any way to get system restore
and safe mode back on line wiithout a WinXP re-install? There must be
something in the registry blocking me.

Thanks in advance for your patience and any help you can give me

For your System Restore issues see MVP Bert Kinney's System Restore
pages: http://bertk.mvps.org/index.html

For the Safe Mode startup problem make sure that you do not have
default "restart on failure" option in effect. Open Control Panel -
System - Advanced and click on the Settings button in the Startup and
Recovery (bottom) section. In the Startup and Recovery window click
on the checkbox for "automatically restart" to clear it, then click on
Apply and OK as needed to exit.

Good luck
