Hi Shipmates
I am using Win XP Pro 2nd ed
pentium3
2x Hdrives 10gb + 80gb
Since I started using XP my machine has got slower and slower and it is a
real problem now because it takes so long to do everything and the programs
freeze etc etc
Firstly I am using all my resources 100% so all pages or programs stick or
freeze then I have to run Task Manager to try and shut the running stuff.Even
this takes ages!
In Task Manager it is telling me that there are sometimes over 40 running
processes .......geeeeez what are all of these for and are they nessessary
?????
I am disabled and need my machine to be top line as it is my line
to the outside world ......so can one of you guys please help and sort this
prob out with me?
Thanks for listening

Hi Pat,

You need to look under the [Processes] Tab to see what is using up
your resources.

If the offending processes are not needed, then uncheck them.

Also, how much RAM do you have?

Lastly how much space do you have available on your boot drive?

Any or all of these things can cause slow downs.

Ciao . . . C.Joseph

P.S. You might also have malware on your system. When is the last
time you scanned your hard disk?

Hi Pat,

What I am talking about is a 'malware' scan. I use Spybot Search &
Destroy an Adaware. If you spend a lot of time on the Internet
web-crawling, then you should being doing these scans on a very
regular basis. I presume you have a firewall & anti-virus whenever
you are on line?

One thing - if you are running any of the programs that purport to
'Manage', 'Orgainise' or 'Free up' RAM, get rid of it. You should
normally expect windows to be finding some use for all of RAM, or
nearly, and it will drop trivial uses instantly when a more important
use comes along. 'Available Physical Memory' in Task Manager is highly
misleading - it should be 'RAM for which there is currently no
conceivable use'

Thanks Alex I will do this .....I have sent you an email to expand on my prob
ok?
Regards
Pat
