loss of features of toshiba laptop

After switching my toshiba laptop to stand by several
times, I start loosing functionality and have to re-start
to get it back. Generally the external keyboard is first
to go, then the outlook starts crashing when attachments
are opened, finally the external mouse stops showing up.
Does anyone have a better fix than restarting?

USB external drives?

Unplug them and plug them back in.. XP should redetect them.
If not, check with Toshiba for updates.
