Loss of Desktop and Start Button

After downloading and installing some professional
software I lost the desktop and start button. No matter
how I boot the notebook the desktop and start button will
not appear. I used the setup disketts, the ERD, I used
the Windows 2000 Professional CD to attempt to Repair.
Nothing seems to work. Any suggestions?
