losing dial up properties

why is it that when I open the dial up properties for my ISDN connection the
password gets distorted and no longer works?

windows vista home basic

I am in a country using a dial up provider that gave me a mile long user
name and a password I can no longer find. fortunately I can access the net
through my wife's user account. I don't dare look at the properties there so
they don't get lost or distorted.

that is one way they password gets jacked. the other way is I have connected
my wife's laptop through cross over and networked the net through internet
gateway. now that I have allowed the desktop to allow other computers on the
network access the internet connection and tested it, only the laptop can
access the internet and any user account on the desktop gets the bad
password error when trying to connect.

I miss DSL!!!

The connectoid icon in your network connections folder is corrupt. If you
have lost your password beyond recovery, I know of no app that would recover
it..
I would try system restore on the problem machines.

Then you can use control panel/user accounts/tasks bar / 'manage your
network passwords'

There is a feature to backup and restore the passwords.

My apologies, I failed to mention I can have the provider mail me a new copy
of my password. However, I am trying to understand your message. the icon
is bad? I thought icons are links to areas and settings, merely a
hyperlinked image. None the less, how do I fix the corrupt connectoid icon;
system restore as you mentioned that in it's own context after you closed
the previous paragraph with recovering the password?

My truest question is how do I prevent my machine from distorting my
password (turning the actual 8 character password into a 16 character
password) in the future once I get the new password from the ISP? Also,
prevent my machines' network from dropping the password when using the
gateway?

Sorry I'm troublesome and thanks for any and all help!

Your perception of the password appearance is not correct. All passwords
appear as 16 character stars. If the password is failing it is not due to
that.
System restore takes the system back to before this corruption, whatever
else it might be.
Connectoids are created for pppoe connections, like DSL, by the Network
setup wizard. removing the connection and recreating it should create a new
connectoid.

Thanks,

I'll do all this once I get the password in the mail so I don't loose
connectivity in the meantime. Insurance!!!

Why does it do the 16 character password from an original 8?

Since it will be a few days before I can do this, I will repost a different
one if I continue to have trouble.

No, it doesn't do that at all. What it does is display all typed
passwords at sixteen non-specific characters. That's so anyone looking
over your shoulder doesn't get a head start at guessing your password
by knowing how long it is.
