Losing Connectivity Almost Every Day

I have a cable connection and all was fine until about 4 weeks ago. Now
almost every morning when I first attempt to use IE or OE I cannot connect.
Using 'Repair' under Network Connections is a temp fix, but the only fix that
works almost all day is to reboot. The trouble desk finds nothing wrong.
Their tech's have been to the house twice and also find nothing wrong. They
replaced the NIC, modem, and all coax connections. No improvement. I still
need to reboot to get connected and sometimes that holds for 2 or 3 days.
Any ideas what's happening? Thanks.

Do you by any chance have ZoneAlarm Pro, and it updated recently? I found
that a new option "Disable XP firewall" crept in, and if selected, it
regularly broke my connection. Turning the option off (since I already had
XP's firewall switched off) seemed to do the trick - I've not lost the
connection since, to my recollection.

Thanks Jason. I do have Zone Alarm (although not Pro) and it does have
Disable XP Firewall checked, so I have now turned that option off. Surely
worth a try. I'll reply with the results.

Hi Jason and Hombreman - Could you please post your respective information
as to:

- your particular OS - (XPHome or XPPro)
- and SP level - (1 or 2)
- whether you're current w/all updates or not,
- and for Hombreman, whether you're are/were using the XP firewall in
addition to ZA prior to turning off that ZA option,
- and your particular ZA version?

Thanks for providing this info if you will.

SP2

- whether you're current w/all updates or not,

As far as I know, yes, althugh I cannot swear to this. It will most
definitely be only the very latest batch of updates that I was missing, I
don't lag behind too much.

What would happen is that after a reboot, it would work fine for, say, an
hour or so. This shortened if I was transferring files across the network.
Then, all of a sudden, it would inform me that I'd lost the network.

I had tried things like disabling the NIC and then re-enabling, but this
didn't cure it - this helped me to conclude that it might be a firewall
issue, since that would still have been running even then. Note, though,
that I already had the Windows XP firewall switched off right from the
start - the SP2 update recognised that I had a firewall and left it alone
(if I remember correctly)- so I'm really not sure what ZA could have been
doing under the hood given that fact.
- and your particular ZA version?

6.0.631.003

(Mine is ZA Pro)

First, Jason's suggested change to Zone Alarm did not work. I again lost
connectivty in mid-day. I tried disabling/enabling my network connection and
that (like Repair) works for about 5 minutes, then I have to reboot. See
below.

Thanks to those who tried to help. The problem did turn out to be Zone Alarm
blocking access on attempts to renew the RoadRunner IP address that expires
after 24 hours. The resolution was to check the boxes in ZA that say "allow
DNS and DHCP servers to have access."
