lose video after splash screen runs

I've done an install of xp pro. Initially the comp. had win2000 but I'm
fairly certain I followed the instructions to erase and set up a new
partition for the install. I had xp running but couldn't get any size
larger than the 640... At that point somewhere, somehow I changed a setting
in the display properties and now after the initial start up the screen goes
to black. I've tried to f8 and get to safe mode but I see a screen that
says keyboard error. Also when I select safe mode all that I get is a full
page of text somewhat similar to dos. From this point I can't exit
normally. I have to manually shut down the comp.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks!

What?

640 what? GB? Because 640MB - you cannot even attempt to install Windows
XP.

Sorry, I couldn't remember exactly what the message was that I was getting.
It has to do with the video size. I checked on another computer and the
smallest setting was 800 x 600 but I'm fairly certain the size I had was 640
X ?. My processer is a dell 1.8 ghz with 1024 mg of ram. Again, looking at
another computer I think I unchecked the box in display properties that
says - use this devise as the primary monitor - thus after the initial start
of screen where it shows windows starting up and should then go to your
desktop I get the a blank screen. I hope that is better information!

Oh - did you install the proper video card driver for the video card
hardware you have in your system?

As for safe mode...

Turn off the computer.
Turn on the computer.
Start tapping - once per second - F8.
Choose "Safe Mode".

I didn't install any driver however initially my monitor was working. The
problem began when I tried to change the size of the resolution and I
unchecked the box that I mentioned before. Getting to safe mode is not a
problem either. Getting out, now that's another thing. That hasn't changed
since when I first posted.

Thanks for the input so far.
