For some reason for a few minutes of boot up time I can browse web
pages then for no reason I can no longer view web pages with the
unable to access site error message.
I can download tons of email, usenet articles, chat programs, in and
out ftp 250 MB+ file sharing with no problems all the while I can not
browse web sites with either browser program.
I had a linksys wireless router and this computer running win98SE ran
a linksys wireless card. I replaced the router with a dlink wireless
router and the linksys wireless card with a d-link card and the
problems still exist.
I completely uninstalled all the Network cards, TCP/IP services and
all Network protocols and shutdown then restarted the computer cold. I
then reinstalled the D-LINK wireless PCI card and the software.
Everything returned exactly the same.
I have run hijack this, spysweeper, adaware and my win98 is
completely up to date with windows update web site. I have no firewall
and I have scanned the computer with norton AV and there is not one
virus on the computer. The other computer is hard wired to running
Winxp and it has no problems browsing web sites.

Does anyone have any ideas why port 80 is not working?

I have a similar problem where IE wont work and my connection to the network shows up on the icon in the system tray as less than optimal and I also cannot see the other computers on my "workgroup" network. The upshot is I couldnt go online. I changed out the router: it didnt fix it. I of course reset everything properly between changes. I reinstalled the NIC: it didnt fix it. I even replaced the motherboard: no change in the syptoms. Finally I went into the Control Panel and "removed" Internet Explorer: this fixed the problem. ( I believe that IE is still there ; it is just sort of switched to the off or inaccessible position). I now use FIREFOX because IE wont work - and I cannot figure out how to patch it or repair it - and yes I tried to "restore" the system to and earlier time but it had no effect.
My advise is to just go and switch off IE in the control panel "add/remove
....Windows Components" and see if that works. Make sure you give your router
time to rerecognize your system: I switch mine off for every change I make
just to be sure. Then use some other browser. The only other option would
be to completely reinstall Windows but that is a huge hassle....one that I do
not wish to perform because of all the reinstalls necessary.

ONE OTHER THING
I am using WXP Pro so it might make a difference; I also noticed you are
attempting to use wireless. The orientation of the transmitter and the
receiver is very important. If you are transmitting say from your celler to
your laptop or desktop which is much higher - you may not be able to do it
because of beam pattern limitations. Check the manufacturer's specs to make
sure you are not exceeding the max distances. Also make sure your network
is using the same name for your WORKGROUP on all machines. You may also be
overlapping another wireless from one of your neighbor's houses. This can
also cause weird problems. And lastly, if there is a large metal object
inbetween the transmitter and receiver (say like a refridgerator; or aluminum
sheathed insulation) then the signal can be blocked or diminished.

Best of luck
