lose internet connectivity in IE and Outlook ONLY

Hi,
4 computers in a workgroup (STUDIO), 3 wired and 1 wireless notebook...
Internet is served via wireless isp through a linksys WRT54G router. 3 pcs
(alf, leef and lesdt) hook to a netgear switch that plugs into the router.
The problem PC is alf. Sometimes while browsing the net (browser is IE),
the internet connectivity will just stop and I will get the "page cannot be
displayed" text message. Along with this, Outlook (v2002 for xp) cannot get
my mail, and I get "cannot find server". This is only going on, on the alf
machine, as the connectivity on the other machines are not affected. I CAN
drop to a command window and ping yahoo successfully, and I can ping the
other computers and the router from alf, even though I cannot load any
internet through IE or Outlook. I can see the other pcs in My Network
Places and I can browse to their drives... I try ipconfig /release and
ipconfig /renew, but it does not fix the problem. The only thing that fixes
it is to power down and on again, where it will work for a while before it
happens again. Restart does not always fix it.

Please help me with this problem! The network adapter on the alf machine is
an Intel PRO/1000 . I have installed the latest drivers, and have tested
the cables... all are good. I have checked the event logs for programs,
system and security, and there are no corresponding errors to this problem.
Also, I scan heavily for viruses and the machine is clean.

ANY help would be most appreciated.

Sincerely,

Leef

Try lowering the NIC speed to 10 Mbps / Half Duplex... Use Device Manager >
Network Adapters > Properties > Advanced tab.. You can try various settings
to see if the connection holds.

I have tried it at 100mb full duplex, and 10mb half, and the problem still
occurs. I have run ipconfig and netstat and can find nothing out of the
ordinary. The pc node type is set to Mixed. Should this be set to
"Broadcast"? Also, why is the communications to the internet only shut down
in IE and Outlook, yet works through a command window ping?

Also, this error does not occur right away. It takes a few days before it
shows up. I am confused as to why it just stops the Internet in IE and
Outlook and not internet connection through a command window. Could this be
an incompatibility issue between my linksys router and my intel network
connector?

Node Type = Mixed is acceptable, but if you want to change it, you can do so
with a reg hack. (Backup your registry key first!)

To set the Node Type to Unknown (recommended), open the registry editor and
go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Netbt/Parameters
and delete these values if they're present: NodeType and DhcpNodeType. (You
must reboot for changes to take effect).

You might try lowering the MTU size of your outgoing packets.

or even resetting your Winsock Stack using this utility:
