Lose internet connection

I have two xp's networked through a netgear 614 router and roadrunner cable
modem. I've got the network running reasonably well except for one problem.
It seems when either computer tries to access the internet from a link in
internet explorer it will not connect and then we lose the ability to connect
to to internet. I have been able to reconect by using the "invoke" and in the
lan settings from netgear hitting apply. Is there a problem with the Outlook
express settings?
