lose headers from Word-97 to Word-2003

When I open a certain group of documents in Word 2003 (which were created in
Word 97), the header disappears. This header had a "different first page"
which created a 3.5" margin at the top of page 1; otherwise the header is
blank. When the header disappears, the 3.5" margin is gone and text begins at
the top of the page. Any suggestions?

Not all documents created in 97 lose their headers in 2003.

Your Whitespace.htm document does not fit the situation -- the document
loads with the white space showing, not hidden. The footer is visible and in
good shape.

It is only the "different first page" header on page 1 that is WIPED OUT,
not just hidden. The document header contains no text. The "differenet first
page" also contained no text, only 260 points "Before:" the (empty) paragraph
to create a 3.5 inch top margin on the first page. Essentially, it's only
the 260 points of space that disappear.

Have you used View | Header and Footer to examine the First Page Header? If
the paragraph is still there and still has 260 points Space Before, then all
should be well. If the header paragraph has disappeared, it may be that the
document is corrupt; see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm

My recollection is that I had a lot of problems with corruption in headers
and footers in unpatched Word 97, but these were fixed by one or another of
the service releases. Is you copy of Word 97 fully patched?
