Lose CD-roms

Guest

After installing XP SP2 I lose the ability to use my cd-roms. They are still
in My Computer, but will not load any cd's. I've tried replacing the
motherboard, memory, and cd-rom's, but I still have the same problem. Can
anybody please give me another suggestion?

Do you have any CD burning software installed. If yes, have you checked the
app's website for any updates as well as to make sure you have the latest
versions.? If you have such software and it is up to date, have you tried
removing and reinstalling the software?

I had a similar problem last week. I lost both my DVD burner and my cd
burner. Nothing worked to get them back.

I had to reinstall windows. Fortunately all my important data is regularly
backed up using a good backup program. I am in the process of reinstalling
my programs and I am getting my data back.

This is timer consuming but when you have a catastrophic failure like ours
there are few options available.

Michael, where did you refile my query and your response? Still
struggling with problem.

Thank you. Neil MacCormick

The only thing I've suggested is to make sure your CD burning application is
a version compatible with XP and to check the website for your CD burning
application, for example Easy CD Creator, Easy Media Creator, www.roxio.com,
Nero, www.nero.com for the latest updates to your CD burning app. If you
have the latest version, try removing and reinstalling the application.

Well, that's much different from loss of CD-ROMs.

In order to respond, I would need to be brought up to date about what you've
done, what results and what security software is installed on your system.

Sorry to be so obtuse. All I want is a copy of your reply to my
initial message so I can double check my search. Your reply seems to
have disappeared from the site. BTW, I really could not describe all
the labyrinths down which I have journied in the past 24 hours. Perhaps
you would agree I should now stump up the $35 for an email session with
MS?

The response I gave you yesterday was as follows:

If you have a firewall, it's possible a setting in the firewall is the
source of the issue. Most third party firewalls have logs you can check to
see what has been blocked. If you have such third party firewall, you might
check its logs to see if it is the issue and make the appropriate
correction. Note: many security applications including antivirus apps have
such functions so you may have to check those as well.

Make sure you are in an administrator account, not a limited account.

If none of the above applies, open Internet Explorer, go to Tools, select
Internet Options, go to the security tab and try lowering your security
level and see if that resolves the issue.
