Looking to increase performance on an Acer laptop

Although I'm very familiar with squeezing out maximum performance with
XP, I'm not as familiar with Vista. My sister-in-law has an Acer Aspire
5100-3357 laptop and it has all the usual OEM crapware, and she has
asked me to speed it up. Any suggestions? TIA.

Prevent all unnecessary applications from auto-starting and make sure the
system has at least two gigs of ram (three is better). Make sure the IE
cache is set to a sane size (<100 megs IMHO). Install PerfectDisk (fully
functional trial-ware) so you can defrag the pagefile, hibernation file, and
other system files.

How much RAM does it have. If less than 2GB, upgrade it.. There's nothing
more critical to Vista performance.

Daave,
As suggested by BillD take off some of the unnecessary add ware provided by
Acer. Plus if the machine has only 1GB of ram consider upgrading to 2 GB (buy
1GB extra) this will dramatically boost the performance. additionally if
desktop visualization is of a big concern then consider turning off the Aero
desktop feature from you display properties. the way to do it is to right
click on your desktop > click personalize > click window color and appearance
click the link saying Open classic appearance properties for more color
options > select Windows Vista basic if in case the color scheme selected is
Windows Aero.
