I posted a couple days ago about files not opening or deleting untill after a
45 second delay in windows explorer. and Rock wrote:

Has it ever run well without the problem? Did you try a system restore to
before the problem started? What changes were made to the system - hardware
and/or software - right before the problem started? What is the malware
status of the computer, and how is that checked?

What happens in safe mode? Restart the computer, as the BIOS splash screen
disappears repeatedly tap the F8 key to get the Advanced Options menu,
select Safe Mode, click enter. Login to the problem account. Does the same
behavior occur?

Does this happen in all accounts? To test create another account, then
logout, restart the computer and login to that new account. Does the
problem exist in that new account?

The problem started about 6 months after i purchased computer in may of 05
so its been happening for over a year . its really not a huge issue its just
annoying as hell. like i said i can work around it by opening the program
first but would love to get it fixed .
OK more answers:never did sys restore and dont know anything about malware
status. but i did try some of the stuff you proposed and got some very
interesting results. First I tried creating a new account and boy did things
change. In the new account I could not access any files at all, basically a
total sytem "hang" even when I did ctrl alt del it wouldnt close the
unresponsive folder , and when I tried to log out, also no response at all. I
had to power off the computer with the switch on the computer then re start.
total chaos so i just deleted that account and am back on "owner".
When I tried safe mode my picture files would open immediately and the
delete function works well. The only wierd thing is that if I tried to open
an excel or word file the program would open immediately but it would not
open to the file chosen, only a grey screen would appear, you could then go
into the file menu and open it from there.

So reply to the original thread.....don't start a new one.

he'll turn up.

but based on your response
to his questions was somewhat
lean. he doesn't have a crystal ball

generally, if there is some kind
of delay with managing files, maybe
your index service has an issue.

maybe your master file table
is out of wak and needs to checked?

maybe you have antivirals that are
checking, triple checking actions
occurring with your files....

maybe your hd is very fragmented

maybe you don't have enough ram

maybe your cpu is very busy doing other
things that you have activated....

but i dont have a crystall ball either...

What do you mean by master file table needs to be checked? Using what
procedure?

It's best to keep replies in the original thread rather than starting a new
one. But now that we're here, let's keep in this one. What is the service
pack level of the XP OS? No service packs, SP1 or SP2?

That was a mess when you created a new account, eh? It was worse, not
better. I had hoped the old account was somehow corrupted so in a new
account things would work ok. If that were the case you could copy the
settings from the old account to the new, delete the old account and work in
the new. That the new account was so messed up suggests some serious
problems with your system.

That you don't know what the malware status of the computer is, doesn't
forebode well. Do you have a current anti-virus program and run it
regularly in safe mode after updating the definitions? Do you use several
non viral anti-malware programs regularly such as Adaware SE, SpyBot S&D,
Windows Defender, etc? Do you keep the system updated through Automatic
Updates or regular visits to the windows update site?

Here are some links for checking for malware:

Richard Harper’s Guide to Cleaning Pests

I'm surprised you're not having more problems. And the problems you have
could be do to any number of software issues, problems with the
installations or software that just doesn't play well with other programs.
The fact that it's been problematic for well over a year rules out using
System Restore as a fix.

I would recommend you backup all important data. Then do the malware
removal steps outlined above. Once you know the machine is clean try a
repair install. This should keep applications and data intact, but with
computers anything can go wrong so always have a full and complete backup.
Here is a link for how to do do a repair install. Afterwards you'll need to
go to the windows update site and install all the updates again.

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

That might or might not work. If it doesn't work then do a clean install of
the Operating System, then reinstall all applications from their original
media and restore data from the backup.

In the end that may be your best bet.

Especially when you enter the wrong search criteria <G>! The question
was not what is the MFT table!

What is your procedure to check whether the MFT table is "out of wak"
as you put it?

Gerry, this is a typical "no answer" by databaseben. He just throws out
meaningless statements, then can't back them up when asked. He gives
generic responses and links when asked for clarification. I asked him once
if he was really Andrew E. in another guise. I did get a chuckle out of his
contention that the MFT might be "out of wak" and needs to be checked. I'm
guessing he means run chkdsk but who knows with him what he means.

Rock

Andrew E actually posted a link to a KB Article as a first reply in a
thread the other day that was helpful. I read it and it changed what I
had to say.

He seems to be Malke's bete noire. Amazing he never retaliates!

Yes I have seen an occasional post by Andrew E. that was on topic and

incredibly bad. Malke describes him as a troll, and I agree.

Finally Fixed!!!!!

Thank you Rock

For some reason my anti virus prog (Panda) wasnt finding the malware, I
downloaded the Ad Aware SE and it found a list of things, then I went into
safemode and Panda found 6 more things then I did Ad Aware again and found
nothing. While doing the research on these programs in the links provided
by
Rock I learned that these bugs duplicate themselves if your'e connected to
the internet when scanning,so from now on ill know to go into safe mode
and
run Panda and Ad Aware from there.

Again thanks so much!
Now for my next annoying issue ..but ill start a new thread for that.

Ok glad you got this fixed! And thanks for posting back.

I'm not sure of the capabilities of Panda - whether it addresses only viral
malware or both viral and non viral, but since you mentioned Adaware SE,
that program deals with non viral malware. Know that no single non viral
anti-malware program catches everything so even with running Adaware that
might not be enough. You should also run Spybot S&D and Windows Defender.
SpywareBlaster is a good program to use to keep malware from getting
installed. It doesn't scan for currently removed malware - it just prevents
some from getting on the system in the first place. BHO Demon is also a
useful tool.

The grand daddy of them all for non viral malware is HijackThis. If you
suspect a malware infection and nothing else is catching it run HijackThis
and post the log to one of the specialty forums for it, not this one. It
takes special expertise to properly analyze a HJT log. Besides this
newsgroup is not a malware removal newsgroup and HJT logs would just clutter
it up horribly.

He is clearly a troll. He says something obviously false, his error is
pointed out to him by multiple people, often with links to Microsoft sites
proving him wrong. He doesn't acknowledge the correction, he doesn't admit
the error, he doesn't try to defend his position, he just ignores the
correction and posts the same egregious nonsense the next time the subject
comes up.

As a single example of this, consider the number of times he has erroneously
told people that it is not possible to upgrade from XP Home to XP
Professional, and ignored all the responses proving him wrong.

My guess is that he's around 14-15 years old, would like to be thought of as
a technical expert, but frustrated by his inability to get almost anything
right, has turned to trolling instead. He's a sad case. I can only hope that
he grows up one day, but I'm not optimistic.
