Hello,

I am looking for recommendations for a freeware or open source program that
helps a person to write SQL queries. Kind of like in Enterprise Manager
where you create views.

Thanks!

Sorry Al, I am afraid I do not understand what you are saying. Would
you mind to explain your thought.

At the risk of sticking my nose in, he's saying that the application you
suggest requires the Microsoft .Net Framework in order to run. If you don't
have it installed, and don't have it on a CD, it's a HUGE download.
Also, some people regard programs written in interpreted languages (like
Visual Basic, etc) which require large libraries of runtime dll's as a pain
in the a$$.
Some people won't install .Net as a matter of principle. I believe he is
suggesting that .Net apps should be as OT as $hareware.

Thank you for taking the time to evaluate Datatime's website. Let me
make some clarification on Your statement.

We do NOT view or consider our Users as "beta testers". They have FREE
LIFETIME LICENSE and SUPPORT and it's our interest to put in the
software all the features they request. This is and will ALWAYS be free
for them. Clearly, developing this kind of stuff cost millions, but our
commercial target will not be individual users, to whom the software is
given for free, but it will be represented by the large Enterprises
which can afford to buy software and must have licences for the
software they use.

Thank you very much for giving me the chance to make clear this point.

A little information on .NET.

Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package is a FREE
download (23.1 MB) [ and some OS (ie. win2003) directly incorporate it
]
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3&displaylang=en

Note that the Runtime it is downloaded only once. And when you update
several times you actually get a big saving in download time with
respect to the approach of incorporating the runtime within the
application. Also .NET is a reality that cannot be ignored. There will
be in the future more and more .NET application. And this will be so
because the approach is rational and the framework robust. Not to
mention that I can assure you that, for instance with other popular
languages, such as VB6 it is nearly impossible to build large and
complex application that will be maintained as easily. I can tell you
for sure, because I have been working a lot with both the products.
Trust me, IMHO, if you compare for instance VB6 to VB.net, it is more
less like comparing a toy Ferrari with a real Ferrari.

But, now, please let's not turn this thread on a discussion on what
paradigm is better. I think the best thing is just to check objectively
the respective programs and - without any prejudice - to choose the one
which best fits your needs.

Thank you very much for your interest.

Saluti a tutti,

- tom

You didn't quote and made an orphan post.
Still my post ("They are harvesting beta testers.") is valid. As every
person that uses your program now is a *beta tester*. Isn't your product
in beta stage?

"but our commercial target will not be individual users, to whom the
software is given for free"

And this is confusing. If the software will be free for individual users
what is advantage of being a *beta tester*?

Please if you answer me quote this post. Thank you.

There is a concise tutorial with the program (top right icon with a
small book). You can also find it on line:
http://cam70.sta.uniroma1.it/TechnicalPreview/StartTutorial.htm

in this case You need especially what we have named for now LESSON 1
(QUERY BUILDER: Create a Data source)

(will will be adding more LESSONS in a while).

Thank you for Your interest and remember You can write to me anytime
with any problem or question. If You need something which is not
already there, it will be promply added.

Thank you very much

You are very right. I am sorry about that. The only excuse I have is
that by using Google groups quoting is not by default (hope Google
people are listening!).

Yes, you are absolutely right: the program is still in development. I
just wanted to clarify that we are not looking for people do "test
activity" on our program. We wish that people "use" our program and if
they have any need we are ready to satisfy these need (for free).

Actually we never talked about "beta testers". This is a concept you
have suggested. I am not saying you are wrong, but perhaps this is the
idea one gets from our site. But, please, understand that English is
not our native language (which is Italian). If you have suggestions to
make it clearer they are really apprecciated. What we wish to express
is that we follow a philosophy similar to Microsoft, we let the large
public have it for free, but we will charge, in future, the Enterprises
which will choose to use it. We are not interested in making business
with individual users. They are indeed our asset.

If you are instead asking if we are willing to award persons who might
go slightly beyond simple usage and will be active in making
suggestions, the answers is definitely YES (this is also stated on the
website). If, and when, this program generates some income, there will
be absolutely no problem to reward appropriately the persons who have
been supporting us with their advice. This is as sure as the sun will
rise tomorrow.
Please if you answer me quote this post. Thank you.

You are very welcome "FirstName LastName", whoever you are ;-)

Thank you very much

But the SQL commands you can use for testing purpose

Do you mean that it will allow me to connect to a Microsoft SQL server and
test SQL commands?
