Looking for directions to do a clean install?

Hi,
I realize this is an xp site but not getting much
reponse from the 95-98 groups.

I have an older pent 133 which has win95 on it.

When i boot it flash's the windows 95 screen and
then goes to a c:\> prompt.

How do i reformat the hard drive and load win98.
Do i need cd rom drivers to first install?

Hi Rich,

make sure that your machine meets the minimum specs for
installing 98 first.

Firstly, Place the Windows 98 CD in your CD drive.

Now reboot your machine and enter the BIOS (pressing
either the F2 key or the Del Key during the boot up
process should do this).

Once in your bios, go to the tab labelled BOOT or BOOTUP.

Now Change your First boot up device to be your CD
(Instead of your Floppy drive or Hard drive).

Now go to the EXIT tab in your BIOS and choose the
selection to SAVE SETTINGS AND EXIT.

Let your machine reboot,

Your PC will now Boot from the CD. Just follow the on
screen instructions to install Windows 98. may I sugest
that you delete all the contents on your hard drive
(called a FORMAT) beofre you install 98. Don't worry,
this option will be given to you when you boot from the
CD.

Hi Rich,

Boot to the command prompt, run

C:\>attrib -r msdos.sys
C:\>edit msdos.sys

Change the bootgui= line to "1" instead of "0". Click alt/f/x/y to close
saving changes, then run

C:\>attrib+r msdos.sys

Then run

C:\>edit config.sys

Look for a line:

dos=single

and REM it out with a semicolon

;dos=single

then again exit saving changes (alt/f/x/y) and then hit ctrl+alt+delete to
reboot. This should get the system to boot normally.

That's NOK, Win 95 doesn't boot.. and it's back to 'good old DOS..'
Could be ? :-(

With a boot(floppy)disk, a Win98 CD and a Win98 product key.

No, a 'virtual' CD ROM drive wiil be created using the floppy, except if the
CD ROM is a external drive. Ín that case you'll need to install the 'SCSI'
driver in DOS mode.

WIN 98 SE will also boot from the CD, but you'll have to check the First
Boot Device in BIOS, and change it to CD_ROM.
