Looking for a cheap and cheerful anti virus app.

Hi,

A friend of mine has just installed his first modem and is looking for bog
standard anti virus programme. I have McAfee VirusScan but I'm not sure I
want to recommend it to anyone. I see AVG is about half the price of McAfee
and also offers automatic updates. Does anyone here have any views on it or
can they recommend another software ?

Thanks

Hi Peter,

I've been using the AVG freebie on the laptop running NT4 without a
problem so far. About a year ago their product wasn't up to scratch, but
they seem (along with others) to have got their act together:

As far as free products go there's also others like:
http://www.free-av.com/ but don't know what they're like.

Nod32 seems to get consistently good reports - I am also tempted to try it
out (once my desktop NAV expires).

Regards,

Mick

lolo!

Hi!
I've been running DrWeb for Windows for more than FIVE years now on my
computer. I've never had any problems with resources or
viruses.
The architecture of this software is simply wonderful and if you're using
w9x then you will never find a better vxd than the one included in the
package to monitor your PC (spider.vxd) without slowing you down in any way.
I changed to VirusChaser only six months ago because I knew it was based on
DrWeb 's engine and architecture (only the user interface has been improved,
the rest is 100% DrWeb technology) and I strongly recommend it to you.
The package available at www.virusdesk.com is only 4Mo, it installs in less
than a minute and is a FULLY FUNCTIONAL version whose updates are time
limited for 30 days
Bye!
