Long Word Doc Versions Problems

V

vilas

#1 doc (older version) cannot be copied unless #2 doc (newer
version)is also selected for copy. They appear to be inexticably
linked. When I open #1 on my Mac (originals are from Windows) in
either Word or Pages, #1 opens fine, but #2 returns a page saying,
"This page uses frames, but your browser doesn't support them." (NB: I
am opening them in word processing programs, not a browser, so why
does it say browser?)

1) How can I separate these?
2) How could #2 have been edited in Windows Word, but be inoperable
due to frames/"browser" on the Mac? How can this be fixed?

TIA, Martha

Hi,

Original poster here. The documents being inextricably linked happens
in Word for Windows too, but the problem with doc #2 not showing in
Pages or Mac Word appears to be a Mac only issue.

Nope: It's not Mac Word (in fact, Mac Word can't do this...) It's a
strictly WinWord 2000 or higher device known as "Table of Contents in a
Frame".

Which I used to use a lot because it's rather cool, but it does result in
TWO files being saved to disk. The "main" file has the file name of the
actual document, but it does not contain the text, only the Frame Set. The
"other" file contains the text.

When you open the first file, Word acts like a browser: it sets up a set of
frames, then brings the text in from the other file.

Open the main file in Web Page View and it should all sort itself out. If
it doesn't, you are missing a file :)

Cheers
