When I start up my Sony VAIO notebook with Windows XP,
the desktop shows up within reasonable amount of time,
but when I position the cursor on the START bar, the hour
glass appears. I also cannot launch any applications
until this hour glass clears. I would guess from the
time I power on the notebook, it takes approximately 2-3
minutes before I can launch an application.

Is this normal? Any input would be appreciated.

Dave
it can be the norm, it depends what you're system is
loading in the background.
XP starts up the desktop fairly quickly and in theory you
can use it right away. However, it then also starts up a
number of things that you have specified that it starts,
only when your session is valid.
Thinks like msn messenger, virus scanner, wireless network
connections etc. Some of these can take a long time to
start properly and can take a lot of the processor, making
it tricky for you to do anything sensible until they have
all started.

So, it's not XP as such, but the things that it's starting
for you.

You can try removing some of the options if you like for
speed, but if you need them, then you need them.

hope that helps
Dave
