Long pauses while opening files

Whenever I try to browse to find a file (example - through Word's OPEN =>
BROWSE function) whenever I click on the drop down arrow, it pauses for about
5 minutes before the browse box comes up. This happens in any program. Also
there is sometimes this long wait, when browsing the Internet. There is no
error mesaage and everything else seems to work correctly.
