long name issue during backup of files

In order to get backup of my data, I simply copy/paste from the source to
destunation (an external hard or another folder within the same hard. I know
this might not be a good way)
My problem is that:
1- SOmetimes WIndows give an error message that it couldn't copy due to long
file names and it aborts the copy/paste procedure which causes not to copy
the remained file as well. Finding the remaining files is really a pain.

2- Sometime even files can not be copy for un-known reasons for me.

Do you have better solution for copying vast amount of files (about 1 Gb)
each time for backup purposes with less pain?
How can I overcome long name problem during copy/paste?

There is a limit of some 254 characters for the combined
length of file+folder name. You will have to place the
information inside the files instead of having very long file
and folder names. 254 characters is a long, name! This
reply is about 260 characters . . .

Thanks.
Is there an easy way to control length of a name of a web page before
saving. Intentionaly I don't make such lengthy names. Also I think it is not
good to change the name of saving web pages for consistency with future
searces. Mostly these long names come come from web saving pages.
