Long Filenames removed when compacting Access 97

I have several databases I maintain that reside on network drives. If
I try to compact them, the filenames are shortened to the old DOS short
filenames. I am running Access 97 on Windows XP Pro. The fileservers
are Novell. Anybody have this happen to them?
 
I've not observed this behaviour with servers running Windows, so I would
think it's something to do with Novell.
