long ethernet (LAN) cable

Tried to set up a home network using 6m long ethernet cable.

Was able to connect one PC to a router, but another PC would show "cable
unplugged".

Exactly the same cable was used.

Anyone came across something like this?

It is possible the jack on the computer is damaged or just
dirty. Blow the jack out with compressed air and try again.
Also, try a different cable. The 6 meter (20 foot) cable is
well within the length allowed.

Thanks Jim.

That other PC can be connected to a router using a shorter cable alright.
And the first PC is connected to the router using this 6m cable without a
problem.

Very strange isn't it?

At what length could the length become a problem?

100 metres is max Ethernet cable length, is the network card on the PC
that's not working enabled ?

Thanks BJ!

The card is enabled alright.

Is this possible that a network card does not have enough _power_ to connect
over longer distance? You see, it works OK when connected using <2m cable to
the router or directly to the modem.

I have a temporary setup for the moment, just wondering what could be wrong
with the initial setup.

BTW I have crimped the 6m cable myself on both ends - RJ45 connector on one
end and a wall socket on the other. It is my first hand made cable. Again, it
works fine with the first PC.

Appreciate everyone's input.

I have a similar problem, a new PC with Vista will not work using the same
cable I have used for years on XP. I installed a new network card and it
still won't work.

Did you try another Ethernet cable? Another port on your switch/hub?
