when i logon to windows,i type my password,my background flashes,
then it closes saving settings very quickly.i have tried safe mode booting
and it does not help.
any ideas?

This is probably the result of some malware that has affected the file
userinit.exe or the registry entry that points to it. I have dealt with this
issue on several previous occasions, with mixed results. I would suggest the
following options:
a) Ask a computer-savvy friend to assist you. He will need some means to
access your hard disk independently of Windows. He also needs some
experience in registry editing.
b) If you have another PC that is networked to the problem machine and if
the problem machine runs Windows XP Professional and if you have some
experience with maintenance at a Command Prompt level then it may be
possible to resolve the problem within this thread.
c) Reload Windows from scratch.
