Hello

PC boots up in reasonable time but when click to login takes AGES.

How do I troubleshoot something like this. It all started to go horribly
wrong after installing Norton anti-spam 2005. But login started to slow
AFTER uninstalling and manually removing norton.

Any ideas?

tune up / clean your registry via avail freeware.

you might also want to ensure that there are no lingering startups, so
disable them or all of them in the msconfig.

you might want to download systemmechanic trial software it use all the
avail options to find and correct other issues that may be attributing...

then use a profile hive cleaner from microsoft.com your pc should then be
able to start in a fewn minutes....

A couple more thoughts....

Is the computer a laptop? And, is it a domain member?

After login, it will be searching for a DNS server and (if it's a domain
member) a domain controller. The standard timeout on these searches is 2
min. You may want to be sure that your Norton isn't blocking DNS ports (it
shouldn't be, but....). If it's a laptop and also a domain member, disable
the wireless until after you've logged on when away from a LAN connection.

I've spent a lot of time recently with this issue (see my post "Slow XP
logon") and it's very frustrating!
