Logon Passwords

H

Hank Lambert

I am running Windows XP Professional. I am using the
welcome screen without the need to use passwords to log
on. How to I continue using the welcome screen, but
require a password for each user that wants to log on to
this machine. It is set up as a worgroup, not a domain.

Thanks,

Make sure you are logged on with full administrator rights and run the
following in a command prompt.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\control.exe userpasswords2

You should then be able to change groups and reset the password for each
account. You can also suppress or reinstigate the welcome screen prompt.

DO NOT follow this advice. Resetting the password in this manner will cause all stored passwords for users, other than yourself, to be lost, and if file encryption is in use, the users will not be able to access their encrypted files.

You should have each user log on and create a password for their account. You can force this by going to Start, Run and entering LUSRMGR.MSC Expand the Users group and double click each user, in turn. Check the box User must change password at next logon. This forces them to change it from their account. If you have Password never expires checked, you'll have to uncheck it. Once all users have changed their password, then you can go back and uncheck this setting and reenable password never expires, if you wish.
