Help!!
I also wanted to avoid the annoying logon procedure so followed Dave's
advice above. Now my logon is no longer accepted!! I can still log on
as administrator with no password, however I cannot directly get at
any of my previous desktop settings and most importantly my mail and
news in outlook express under my usual profile (incidentally this also
was in admin. group!)
I am using win2kpro but With FAT32 (had dual boot with win98
previously) - should this matter? I have tried reseting the password
for my regular profile, tried to set back to require users to use
password etc - but nothing seems to work - still get system cannot log
me on!! I am entering exactly the same password as before so why won't
it work? Please help - there must be some way to restore my previous
log on or must I drag all my documents and setting data into the
administrator account?

I had done exactly this, except that set password is not under
"username"|properties, but if I right click I can select set password
or All tasks|set password. Still doesn't work! I have tried changing
to a different password - indicates that it is changed, but still the
system will not let me log on!
I am absolutely sick of these log on issues - I don't need this on my
single user machine and now I have to waste hours trying to retrieve
and migrate all my settings to the main admin account, and what if the
same thing happens with that! Any other ideas as to what I can do -
why would set or change password not work?

Something is amiss with what you're doing. Try creating a new account.
Verify that you can logon with the new account. Then while logged on as
another user (with administrative rights) Control Panel|System|User
Profiles, select your olduser, Copy To, Browse to
%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\newuser
Change "Permitted to use:" to "newuser" OK

Sorry about the delay, but thanks Dave, your suggestion worked fine -
I'm back in business with a new user account separate from admin.
Should I now, using explorer, delete my 'olduser' profile folder and
all it's contents, and will this remove all those copied original
files and settings? I presume it is best to clear all these away. I
would still prefer to have auto-login but I am not going to risk
trying again - as you say something must be amiss. Thanks again.
Derek

Yes you can delete the old one. But why not keep it around for a month or so
to be sure you have everything.

Here's an article that describes autologon.
