logon hangs, windows 2000 server

hi,
my server is hanging at logon, it is also taking a long time to start,
stalling at the 'preparing network connections' screen. you finally put in
your passowrd but it just hangs and then goes back to the logon prompt,
sometimes displaying the message that 'the netlogon service cannot be
started'.
any ideas?
