"Logon Failure: unknown username...." when attempting to join doma

Windows XP (sp2) client trying to join a Windows 2003 Standard Server domain.
The full error is:

The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "domain name":
Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

i'm attempting to join using the admin account as well as other admin
granted accounts. all passwords are fine. attempting this via the common
Computer Name/Change option via XP's System Properties.

Local admin accounts don't work. Ask your system administrator for
appropriate credentials.

Have you permitted the Domain Administrator to make changes on the local
machine? You'll need to do this as local Administrator.
