Login scripts running too slow

I have set up a group policy where a logon script maps user's drives,
then it loads a piece of Timesheets software for the users to fill in.
The idea is that the login script should be hidden , which it is, and
should be run before the user is allowed to see their desktop. But what
happens is that the desktop is shown then the drives are mapped,
followed by the Timesheet software

Does anyone know of a way where all group policies and logon scripts
are run before the desktop is shown ?

Many thanks in advance

See tip 4133 » The 'Run logon scripts synchronously' policy does NOT work in Windows XP?

I went in to Administrative Templates but when I tried to expand it I
get lots of pop up windows that all say:

"The following entry in the [strings] section is too long and has been
trancated"

Each of these pop ups has a different message below the one above and
because of this I cant get into policies. Do you know what causes this
and how to solve it ?

Thanks again for your help
