Login problem

I running Vista Enterprise on an HP laptop. I'm having an issue where
randomly it doesn't allow me to login, or sometimes after I'm logged in and
then the screensaver lock activates it won't let me "unlock" it (so basically
log back in).

After I do ctrl-alt-del I see the screen that shows the user accounts on the
system...when I try to click on any of them nothing happens. The password
box never displays. Its like the screen is "locked" up for some reason. My
only solution is to turn it off and turn it back on.

Any ideas? This is a new laptop...running latest service pack and updates.
I haven't installed anything new on it. Last new app I installed was a few
weeks ago...and then this problem started. I tried turning off UAC and that
didn't resolve the problem (I was just guessing).

Your answer is to use System Restore return to before you installed that
dodgy app and see if that cures it.

What was the "new app" you installed?

The app I installed was Wireshark (network protocol analyzer). I installed
that the week I got the laptop. 3 weeks later the problem started.

As I responded to the other poster -- the app was Wireshark. Very commonly
used network protocol analyzer. 3 weeks later the problem started. I only
mentioned that in the first post to verify that I hadn't made any recent
changes to the system.

I can't imagine a system restore to before I installed Wireshark is the
solution here.

Sorry -- I looked back at my original post. I didn't mean to make it sound
like the problem started directly after I installed the "new app". As I
stated in my reply -- the problem started 3 weeks after installing the last
app (Wireshark).

OK. It sounded like you installed this new app and had problems but since
that's not the case Wireshark probably has nothing to do with it. Here are
a few guesses:

What's the malware status of the machine? Be sure the computer is clean:

Any clues in Event Viewer?

Does the same problem occur with an external USB keyboard?

Thanks for the reply Malke.

Malware testing came back clean.

I checked the Event Viewer and the only thing relevant I can find around the
time the issue last happened is:

System Log, Event ID 541, Source TBS

"An operation in progress was interrupted by a power management event."

If I look at the App Log I don't see errors around this time but do see
something from the HP ProtectTools Service:

"PowerEvent handled successfully by the service."

I'm not sure if this is related or not. I turned off the system standby so
I'm going to see if it occurs again. If so then I'll pay better attention to
the specific time and see if the above logs return.

Thanks for your help.

Also -- I haven't tested it yet with an external keyboard. If the error
returns I'll try that.

Thanks again.

Is your Vista Enterprise which is a VL version a legal version that you got from
the Home Use Program of your employer,Educational institution,or the armed services.

If it is a legal version then support for it is free. If not then you are wasting
everyone's time

Here you will find the Phone numbers and email addresses as to where and whom to
