Sorry there is not a way that I can help you recover the password. However
if you reinstall the OS make sure you choose New Install and not an upgrade.
If you upgrade you will use the exisitng password and user accounts. As long
as you have not encrypted file you should not lose them unless you reformat
the drive. If you save the file to your profiles My Documents then they will
be located under Documents and Settings\<Username>\My Documents

There is a way...

You CAN change the password (even if you don't know the
old password).

If your computer-savvy, it can be done for FREE and fast.
If not, you have to pay for a commercial tool ($70-$300+).
Or, you can just start from scratch and reinstall the
operating system (that's the last resort).

This is an excellant website that explains how this whole
thing works and where to find the free tools to change the
password (Petter Nordahl-Hagen's tool, which I have used,
worked for me! In under 10 minutes. And it was FREE!).

Good luck.

Q321305 How to Log On to Windows XP If You Forget Your
Password
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-
US;Q321305

http://securityadmin.info/faq.htm#password

Reboot to Safe Mode, select Administrator, leave password
blank.
Then go to User Accounts in Control Panel and
delete/change the
password.

You do not need to reinstall if you forgot the admin or
any other password.

There is a boot disk you can download at:
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html

that will let you reset the password of any account on
NT4, Windows2000 or
XP.

Just follow all the default settings which are for the
admin account.

For an Win2k AD domain controller, you need to do more
than that:
