Logging into XP Account over home network

I have 2 machines running XP on a home network (connected either wired or
wirelessly through a Netgear FM114P). I have several accounts on each
machine.

I'd like to set things up so that I can log into the accounts on the old
machine from the new one in order to see files, rather than use the shared
folders facility; as that would mean that not only the new machine could see
the files, but users of the other accounts on the old machine.

Can anyone help me?

David,

Are your computers running XP Home or XP Pro? If Pro, are they running Simple
File Sharing? The answer to those questions determines how secure you can be.
Know the differences - read the article, and linked articles.

Thanks Chuck, I'll take a look at these links. FYI the old machine is
running XP Professional and the new machine is running XP Home SP2. Cheers,

Off hand I would say no-can-do. What you are suggesting - logging on
remotely - requires a roaming profile, which as far as I know requires a
server.
Concern over others viewing folders/files should be capable of being resoled
via NTFS and assigned permissions.

You can never open a profile situated on another machine, even in a domain
the profile is opened on the local computer, roaming or not.

I think what you want to do here is to create a folder outside of "Documents
and Settings" and share that folder.

If using simple sharing, you then need to apply a password to the Guest
account (that's the guest account in the user-manager, not the on on the
Welcome screen)

If using XP Pro you can determine which users can access the share through
share permissions. On XP Home you have the option of a common password, but
no discrimination between users.

The other option might be to remote-control the other computer with VNC.
With a fast network and the Mirage driver this is fast enough for
wordprocessing, etc - but not for games.

Not true - a roaming profile is stored on the server -its function is to
permit a user to connect from any computer in the network - when a user
logs on the server sends the profile to the local computer - when user logs
off profile is updated (if necessary) on the server.

David,

If you have XP Home on one computer, you'll probably end up with Simple File
Sharing on both computers, which will indeed let everybody access any file that
anyone can access.

If you disable SFS on the (XP Pro) old computer, though, you'll be able to setup
selective access (Share Permissions), so only you can access the files thru the
network. And you can setup Security so only you can access the files locally.
