Log on as administrator in Safe Mode. The default password is blank, which
means you just press enter. Once in, go to Control Panel, Users, and reset
your password. Reboot.

thanks! I tried that and it comes to a black screen with an error
message that says something about an error with the password and that
the service cannot be contacted. It also said something about
contacting the system adminstrator. It was very strange. any ideas on
how to get past this?

What, exactly, is the error message?

it read " log on message,
the specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.
please try again or consult your system adminstrator"

Hi ,

Simple. I think you may be using the Classic Windows 2000 Login Screen, with your UserId filled in and the password space is blank. Just click OK. This will allow you to login into your User Id.

Download the program and save it in your Briefcase. Then once downloaded, open your Briefcase Folder and locate the file and click on it and follow onscreen instructions.

hey,
I am using Windows XP home edition. The log in screen is for Windows
XP. I've tried no password and clicking ok/enter/the green arrow
button. Every thing I try comes up to a black screen with an errror
message that reads:

"Log on message, the specified domain either does not exist or could
not be contacted.
Please try again or consult your system administrator"

Hi ,

Start Windows in Safe Mode and log in as the Adminstrator. Go to Users Accounts and create a new User ID as a Computer Administrator. Reboot the computer and log into the newly created User ID. See if it works. Report back. I will tell you how to import / copy the files without creating new problems.

If it works, the User ID you were using become corrupt in the Windows Registry.

Maybe cleaning the Windows Registry with a Registry Cleaner, may fix the problem without having to move files around.

Download TuneUp Utilities 2006 from http://www.tune-up.com/. The program comes with a 30-day Trial. Use its Registry Cleaner.

HELLO,

i tried starting windows in safe mode and it asks for a password for
adminstrator as well. I don't have the password for that nor do i know
what it is. is there a universal password to log on as the
adminstrator? thanks

The default for the Administrator password is Blank. Select the Administrator account, leave the password field empty and press ENTER.

Hi ,

Try hitting Enter for the Password without typing anything in there. If you, yourself install Windows XP, there should be no password, unless you installed a password. If the operating system was installed by someone other than you, they may have added a password.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321305/en-us

To reset the passwords, go Start Run and type in control userpasswords2 and click OK. Under Password for Administrator click Reset Password. Another window opens up. Just click OK. Do not fill in a Password. (Besides anyone can get into any computer, if they choose to.) Then click OK again.

Once you log into the Administrator Account, repeat the process to reset the Password to Blank for your own Account. You can't reset the Password using your own Account, because Ctrl-Alt-Del key combination is interepted by the Task Manager program.

This may fix the need to create a new User Id Account for yourself.

thanks for the responses...however i'm still getting error messages.
I've tried not typing anything for the adminstrator password and just
clicking enter. I get the same message. is there any advice how to get
around this or should I just uninstall windows xp and re-install it?
Thanks!

Hi M,

This procedure maintains your XP Desktop, but reinstalls Windows XP.

01. - Go into Computer Bios and Set Defaults and Exit, if you know how.
Make sure the Boot Order is set to Boot to CD-Rom Drive First.
02. - Insert Windows XP CD into CD-Rom Drive.
03. - Reboot the computer.
04. - Press any key to begin to boot from the Windows XP CD.

14. - And now it installs Windows XP.
15. - You need to be here now.
16. - Starts at 39 Minutes to Complete.
17. - At 33 minutes, you need to set Time and Time Zone, if need to.

20. - Now wait for Reboot and you are done.
21. - Go online and go to Windows Update and download and reinstall all the patches.

Note: - If you have the original Windows XP CD, not Service Pack 2 CD, you will need to have already downloaded to Your Briefcase Folder, WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU from this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...be-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&DisplayLang=en

You must install Windows XP Service Pack 2 before you can use Windows Update. Also you must install the tool to validate your copy of Windows after upgrading to Windows XP Service Pack 2, before you can begin to reinstall all the Windows XP Patches.

thanks so much for all the advice and tips you have given me! I will
try this tonight! Thanks again,
