log on problem

A problem developed over night with my XP log on.
At boot up the "welcome" , "user" display occurs.
I've never set up the computer for multi users nor had a pass word.
When "user" is selected nothing happens. The computer can only be turned off.
"contol alt delete" generates a "log on to windows" dialogue box for user
and requests a password???
The only action which gets a result is "shut down".
The F8 key doesn't work and I can't get "safe mode" to work either.

Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Hi Jamez,

Hit ctrl+alt+delete, type in administrator and try logging on to that
account.
