Log on/Log off issues

Windows XP, was at service pack1. Could possibly be at
SP2 but don't know.

Boots up normally until you get to the Ctrl-Alt-Del.
Once you enter user name and press enter the PC
immediately goes to loading settings and just as quickly
goes into a log off status and then back to Ctrl-Alt-Del
prompt. Safe mode does the same thing, logging in as
different user does the same thing. Command prompt logon
does the same thing.

Any ideas out there?

If you haven't already found it, there's a post further down called 'Cannot
log on to Windows XP'. I was having this exact same problem earlier, and
found the advice given there worked perfectly.

Has spyware been recently removed? This can be a after effect of
spyware removal. If so see this link:
