log off button has disappeared

A friends machine is running on windows 2000. recently
the log/off tuyrn /off button disappeared from the start
menu and the only way he can shut down is by ctrl+alt+del

Does anyone know how he can get it back?

Right click on the grey area on the task bar, select
properties, then click on advanced. Go to 'start menu
settings' at the bottom and place a checkmark in
the 'display logoff'. Click apply and then OK.
